Strikethrough text works differently from every other style in this generator. Rather than substituting characters with alternates from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, the strikethrough generator inserts Unicode COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY (U+0336) after every character in your input. U+0336 is a combining diacritic — it overlays a horizontal stroke across the preceding base character regardless of what that character is. The combining character approach means strikethrough works on any Unicode code point, not just the Latin alphabet. Apply it to digits, emoji, Arabic letters, Chinese characters, or any other character and U+0336 overlays them all. The base character is not replaced — the combining character attaches as an overlay on top of the preceding code point. This is why strikethrough is fundamentally different from bold or italic substitutions, where original code points are completely swapped out for new ones from the Mathematical block. Unlike HTML del or s tags, which only work inside a browser rendering HTML, U+0336 works in any plain-text field that renders Unicode combining characters — Twitter bio, Discord display name, Instagram caption, WhatsApp message, and anywhere else that accepts Unicode input. On social media, strikethrough text is used for two main patterns. The first is the self-correction format: write a thought, strike it out, write the honest replacement. Readers see both simultaneously — the surface text and the struck-through subtext. This pattern is a staple of Twitter threads, Reddit posts, and Discord messages. The second pattern is price comparison: strikethrough the original price, follow with the sale price, in any plain-text field where HTML del tags do not render. Discord markdown tildes work in messages, but the Unicode combining method is the only option for display names, statuses, and server nicknames where Discord strips all markdown syntax. LinkedIn may strip combining characters in some profile fields. Twitter does not strip U+0336 — the combining stroke renders intact in tweets, bios, and display names.

Markdown tildes are better in Discord messages because Discord renders them natively and they are easier to type. Why does Twitter sometimes appear to strip strikethrough?
